Arab League, Germany discuss recent developments in Libya

Gheit and Maas also touched upon the preparations for Berlin conference to be held later in January for reaching a comprehensive political settlement in Libya.

Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas discussed Monday the recent developments in Libya, AL said in a statement.

The two officials reviewed the diplomatic efforts exerted for fixing the ongoing cease-fire between the UN-backed Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Khalifa Haftar and political path for settling the war-torn country, the statement said.

Gheit and Maas also touched upon the preparations for Berlin conference to be held later in January for reaching a comprehensive political settlement in Libya.

Libya has been engaged in a civil war since the ouster and killing of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Both the GNA and the LNA accepted the cease-fire called for by the Turkish and Russian presidents on Jan. 8. Hafter and head of the GNA Fayez al-Serraj are scheduled to arrive in Moscow on Monday to sign the cease-fire deal and reach a peaceful settlement
