Erdoğan says scheme to push Ankara away from Mediterranean failed

Turkey announced it would send troops to Libya to support GNA, Egypt opposes

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Tuesday a scheme to push his country away from the Mediterranean failed owing to the measures taken by Ankara recently, pointing to the latest agreement between Turkey and the Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA).

He added that through supporting the internationally recognised GNA Ankara would ensure implementing its agreement with the government.

About a month ago, Ankara and GNA signed two memorandums of understanding to demarcate maritime borders between Libya and Turkey in the Mediterranean, in a step which outraged anger in Egypt, Greece and Israel.

Turkey announced that it would send troops to Libya to support GNA after its request for support in its civil war against the Libyan Arab Armed Force (LAAF) supported by Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates.

Egypt denounced the Turkish step and called for an urgent meeting for the Arab League to discuss the potential Turkish military interference in Libya.
