The Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces was paid EGP 1.3bn by the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) as part of the cost of establishing a seawater desalination plant in the southern area of SCZone.

Mohamed Shaaban, vice president of SCZone, said that the desalination plant has a production capacity of 100,000 cubic metres per day, at a cost of €90m (about EGP 1.76bn).

The southern area’s water needs are estimated at 250,000 cubic metres per day until 2030, and about 120,000 cubic metres per day from 2020 to 2025.

Moreover, the Arab Organization for Industrialization will establish a sewage treatment station in SCZone with a capacity of 35,000 cubic metres per day over three stages. The first phase is scheduled to be completed by April 2020.

Shaaban said the southern area of SCZone needs sanitation projects with a total capacity of 75,000 cubic metres until 2030.

He elaborated that the number of companies in the southern zone reached 192 firms, ranging from industrial to service companies spanning over 81.26 sq km which represents 39% of the total 209 sq km area.

Over and above, Shaaban noted that the total land area under negotiation with investors is a project in the southern region of 45 sq km, and that companies are seeking to implement projects in the fields of food production, petrochemicals, petroleum supplies, automotive, electrical appliances, and building materials.
