Minister of Environment discusses Egypt’s climatic concerns with UNFCCC’s chief

Meeting came during COP24 in Poland

Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad met on Saturday with Patricia Espinosa, the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The meeting came during the 24th Conference of the Parties on the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24) which was held in Katowice in Poland over the past two weeks.

In addition to being the head of the Egyptian delegation to the COP24, Fouad is also the current president of the 14th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP14) which was held in November in Sharm El-Sheikh.

She also met with the COP24’s Polish president to stress the necessity of considering the Egyptian concerns in the work programme of the Paris Agreement. The meeting also aimed at ensuring coming out with a fair and a balanced text for the work programme, clarifying the responsibilities of each country, and also considering the developing countries’ interests.

According to a statement from the ministry of environment, the Polish president heading the COP24 praised the Egyptian role in negotiations as Egypt is the chief of the Group of 77 and China, and head of the group of African negotiators in the COP24. Egypt and Germany are leading the negotiations regarding the UNFCCC’s funding.

Moreover, the COP24 ended on Saturday with countries adopting the Katowice rules as a path that will be followed when it comes to stepping up the actions for climate protection, in accordance with the Paris Agreement.
