Court of Cassation approves prison sentences against 135 defendants in Kerdasa violent clashes

Supreme guide of Muslim Brotherhood Mohamed Badie received life sentence in ‘El-Edwa clashes’ case

The Cassation Court rejected on Monday an appeal of 135 defendants of those involved in case known in media as Kerdasa violent clashes against prison sentences handed to them by the Cairo Criminal Court.

The Cairo Criminal Court handed life sentences to 80 defendants, 15-year-prison sentences to 34, 10-year-prison to a child in July 2017. Other 20 were handed death sentences and 21 were acquitted.

In August 2013, a number of 188 defendants were referred to the criminal court for being accused of storming the Kerdasa police station in Giza, killing several officers, and intending to kill others. The storming of the station took place after the ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

The storming occurred on 14 August 2013, shortly after security forces forcibly dispersed the Rabaa Al-Adaweya and Al-Nahda Squares sit-ins. Both sit-ins were organised to show support for Morsi.

In a similar context, the Minya Criminal Court headed by judge Soliman Atta Al-Shahed handed on Sunday life sentence to the supreme guide of the Muslim Brotherhood Mohamed Badie and 64 others in the case known in media “El-Edwa clashes”.

The village of El-Edwa in Minya governorate witnessed acts of violence and vandalism in August 2013, during which they stormed, robbed the police station, and killed one police officer.
