Saudi Arabia silent over court’s cancellation of Red Sea islands deal

The State Council Administrative Court’s ruling on Tuesday cancelled the much contested agreement that transferred sovereignty over Tiran and Sanafir islands to Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has remained silent over the State Council Administrative Court’s ruling that cancelled the Egyptian-Saudi maritime demarcation agreement on Tuesday.

The agreement would have transferred sovereignty of two Red Sea islands, Tiran and Sanafir, to the gulf kingdom.

The Saudi embassy in Cairo refused to comment on the court ruling following a request made by Daily News Egypt.

Saudi authorities have also not issued statements regarding the cancellation of the agreement, which could affect development projects planned between the two countries in the Red Sea region.

The controversial agreement was made in April during a visit by Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud. It has since sparked widespread discontent among both pro- and anti-government factions in the country.

The Saudi Shura council and cabinet both ratified the agreement. However, Saudi officials refrained from commenting on the public anger and protests in Egypt over the agreement between the two countries.
