The Egyptian presidency said Sunday that the “judiciary is completely independent”, in response to Saturday’s verdicts in the ‘trial of the century’, state-run news agency MENA reported.

“It is not allowed to comment on the judiciary verdicts,” the presidency said in a statement. Referring to the Egyptian constitution it added: “There should be separation between legislative authority and other authorities, with giving respect and trust to Egypt’s professional judges.”

The statement also tackled the reasoning the court announced regarding the verdicts. President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi ordered the prime minister to take all the needed procedures to start paying the compensation for the families of the victims of the 25 January Revolution who, “paid with their lives as a price for the sake of this nation,” the statement added.

He also ordered the legislative reforms committee to start studying legal reforms on the code of criminal procedure, which the court referred to on Saturday, and prepare a report about it and present it to the presidency.

Mubarak faced charges of participating, through agreement, in the killing of protesters during the 25 January Revolution. These charges were deemed inadmissible by court, with the judge citing an “implied decision” by prosecutors that there is no basis to put Mubarak’s name on the list of people facing murder charges.
