Egypt needs rule of law, says French foreign minister

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius concerned for Egypt's future

Respect for the the rule of law is a precursor to long term stability in Egypt, French foreign minister Laurent Fabius said in a speech Thursday.

The speech came at the end of the three day annual French ambassadors meeting in Paris where Fabius spoke about the foreign issues facing French ambassadors.

Fabius added that in “the crisis in that rips Egypt, a close ally with France, we have strived to work for a peaceful and democratic process.”

In regards to recent violence in Egypt and its near neighbours, the foreign minister said via Twitter: “The French want the people of Egypt to have a choice through elections.” He also hoped for a reduction of violence via French “support to stabilise the region.”

The French foreign ministry previously said: “It is necessary to find a way towards calming Egyptians” before the dispersal of sit ins at Rabaa Al-Adaweya and Al-Nahda Square in support of former President Mohamed Morsi.
