The Cairo Criminal Court delayed examining the third session of the retrial of businessman Ahmed Ezz and former Head of the Industrial Development Authority, Amr Assal on Monday, according to state-run Al-Ahram.

The session was postponed to 5 December and Ezz was released but placed under house arrest, Al-Ahram reported. Ezz is charged with illegally monopolising the steel market through steel licences.

Al-Ahram said the Cassations Court lifted the previous ruling that gave Ezz and Assal 10 years in prison and former Minister of Trade and Industry Rachid Mohamad Rachid 15 years in absentia, and ordered the retrial of Ezz and Assal.

Previously Ezz had a seven year jail term and an EGP 19bn fine for money laundering, both of which were revoked back in October 2012 by the Cassations Court.

Ezz was a well-known figure in the now dissolved National Democratic Party.
